Recreational Co-Ed Volleyball Rules
Christian Co-Ed Volleyball Fellowship
Court Rules:
- Each match will consist of three games, the match will last no longer than 80 minutes. For example, a game scheduled at 6:30 PM will end at 7:50 PM regardless of score. A team must score at least 25 points and hold a margin of 2 points or more over their opponent to win. If the game becomes tied at 26, the team to first score point 27 wins.
- A maximum of 6 players per team may be on the court during play. This shall consist of no more than three males and no less than two females at any time during play. Any late-arriving player may rotate in on the next service. If there are more than 6 players, everyone will rotate out.
- All ball handling calls are strictly the judgment of the referee (all volunteers). Calls are not open to debate during play. Captains may discuss the referee call in an appropriate manner only for the purpose of better understanding why a call was made. The captain should be the only person to approach the referee. If a player has a question about a call, the player should ask the captain the question, not the referee. A replay may take place if the official makes a mistake that they recognize.
- Serving: If you toss the ball in the air and you do not hit the ball, you must let it drop to the floor without touching it. You can retry the serve one time. If you fail to serve after the second attempt the point is given to the other team.
a. One foot may go over the back line on the serve, you must serve from within the designated court area.
b. Net serves will be in play.
c. Player in the service position must wait for the referee to blow a whistle before serving.
d. The serve may not be blocked or attacked from a player in the front row of the opposing team.
- If the ball hits the ceiling or any object hanging down on the serve (i.e., lights, basketball backboard, etc.) it is a fault and the other team gets a point. If the ball hits the ceiling or any object (i.e. lights, basketball backboard, etc.) within the court boundaries on your side it’s playable.
- All team members except server must be in bounds at the time of service. The boundary lines are considered to be in bounds.
- The ball may be contacted no more than three times on each side of the net. If more than one touchpoint is made by a team on a play, at least one of those contacts must be made by a female team member.
- A block touch does not count as a regular touch (the ball may be contacted three times after a block touch and the same player that blocked the ball may contact it again).
- Replays can take place if:
a. Official makes a mistake that they recognize
b. Interference from an object or person
c. Injury on the court
d. Double fault (when opposing players make simultaneous faults)
- A player or their clothing may not touch the net during a “live” ball (insignificant touches are permissible). If the force of the ball hitting the net causes the net to contact an opposing player, no foul occurs.
- A center line violation occurs when:
a. A player’s foot (feet) or hand(s) crosses completely over the center floor line. (To touch the opponent’s
court with a foot (feet) or hand(s) is permitted, provided that some part of the penetrating foot (feet) or hand(s) remains either in contact with or directly above the center line).
b. Any other part of a player’s body touches the floor across the center line.
- Ball handling: Legal contact is any touch of the ball by any part of a player’s body.
a. Kicking is not allowed; however, foot plants are acceptable, meaning if the ball comes off your foot while your foot is planted on the ground, the ball is considered in play.
b. Illegal contact occurs when the ball momentarily comes to rest on the hands, arms, or any other part of a player’s body. Examples of contact:
a. An open hand push of the ball.
b. An open hand pushing of the ball where the ball visibly comes to rest.
c. Throwing the ball, where the ball visibly comes to rest on the hand.
d. Illegal contact also occurs when your hands aren’t together when hitting the ball (this is a double hit-successive hits or contacts by the same player)
- Two 30-second timeouts are permitted by each team in a game.
General Rules:
- Try to utilize all three hits, this allows for more organized and competitive play.
- A period of five minutes of warm-up will be allowed before a match begins. Please arrive early.
- Everyone on the team will take turns to keep score, set up/tear down. Please check with your captain when your team is responsible to keep score and/or referee.
- No volleyballs are permitted outside of the gym.
- Please be sure to play your position and give others an opportunity to hit the ball. The setter ALWAYS takes 2nd hit unless they call for help. Play your position or others or yourself could become injured.
- Males will not be the setters; females should be the setter. Male should switch after the ball is served so a woman can be in the setting position. Females can be hitters; males should not be the setters.
- Substitutions: If a team does not have enough people to play at their scheduled time, they may use a substitute. Preference is to choose someone who is available on the other team if more than six players are on that team and both captains mutually agree. Do not ask a scheduled referee or scorekeeper to sub if there are other players available.
c. You can only sub one time per night. You cannot sub if you are keeping score or refereeing.
d. If you are not a registered player in the league, you cannot sub.
e. If you have six players, you do not need a sub, unless you have four males and only two females, then you would need to recruit a female to sub.
- When giving the ball to the opposite team, roll the ball under the net.
- Participants should wear comfortable athletic clothing suitable for the sport. Clothing should be modest and suitable for mixed company, avoid overly revealing attire. Removing or partially removing any clothing while in the facility is strictly prohibited overall. The dress code is to ensure that all participants feel comfortable and safe while participating.
- Players in the league must be at a minimum age of 15.
- The league does not keep standings, so winning should not be the #1 priority. Everyone likes to win games, please do not let the competitiveness trump your righteousness or encouragement of others. Please win and lose with proper sportsmanship.
- If you become hurt and can no longer finish the game, please see your captain right away. You will need to complete an injury report before you leave.
- If you or your family members and/or guests sit on the stage, please be watching the games and paying attention 100% of the time as balls will encroach upon the stage area.
- All children must be supervised and must remain in the gym. Children are not permitted to play with the volleyballs during game times. Children are not permitted to play on the courts with any kind of balls or toys.
