2025 Legacy Sports Volleyball Rules

Rule 1: At the moment the ball is hit by the server, each team must be positioned within its court in the following rotational order (except the server); back right (server) position 1, back middle position 2, back left position 3, front left position 4, front middle position 5, and front right position 6. A positional fault is assessed when a player is not in his/her correct position at the moment the ball is hit by the server, resulting in a point and service to the opponent (positions must be rectified)

Rule 2: No player is permitted to make contact with the ball higher than the top of the net on an opponent’s service.

Rule 3: Serve may be returned by any legal hit; no attacking a serve from the front row.

Rule 4: There is a maximum of three (3) hits per side; a block touch (when the block is attempted but the ball doesn’t return over the net) does not count as a hit.

Rule 5: Players may not hit the ball twice in succession; a block touch does not count as a hit.

Rule 6: The ball may be played off the net during a volley.

Rule 7: Contact with the net (by any part of the body) is only a fault if contact is made during the action of playing the ball or if it interferes with play.

Rule 8: A ball that touches any part of the boundary line is considered ‘in’.

Rule 9: Teams are permitted only one 30-second time out per game.

Rule 10: Only front-row players can contact the ball higher than the top of the net. The backcourt players can only contact the ball above the top of the net if they jump from the attack line, which separates the front and back part of the court. Backcourt players may hit the ball over the net from the front row if it is below the top of the net.

Rule 11: A legal hit is contact with the ball which does not allow the ball to come to a rest visibly. Hitting the ball illegally (carrying, palming, lifting, throwing, etc.) is a violation. You can stop the balls movement with your foot by extending your leg and foot but not actively kicking the ball

Rule 12: If two or more players contact the ball simultaneously, it is considered one play and neither player involved may participate in the next contact.

Rule 13: Everyone except the server must be within the court's lines during the serve.

Rule 14: A player’s foot can be on the centerline but cannot cross over unless it is a matter of the other team’s safety. No part of a player’s body may initiate contact with the net. A player cannot reach under the net if it interferes with the ball or the opposing player.

Rule 15: It is illegal for the ball to cross over the net outside the crossing space. The ball must cross over the net, between the court boundaries and their imaginary extension, and without contacting the ceiling or anything hanging down from the ceiling.

SCORING
Rule 16: Rally scoring will be used. (A point will be scored every time a team wins a rally.)

Rule 17: Games 1 and 2 will be played to 25 points (must win by 2 points). Game 3 will be played to 15 (must win by 2 points).

Rule 18: In case of a forfeited game the score will be 25 - 0; a forfeited match will be 2 games, each with 25 - 0 scores.

Rule 19: The Winner of the match will be the team that wins 2 games.

THE SERVE
Rule 20: The server must serve from behind the end line, or service line.

Rule 21: The server may not serve until the referee blows the whistle.

Rule 22: The ball can be served underhand or overhand and must be visible to opponents before being served.

Rule 23: A served ball may make contact with the net and drop to the other side for a point. There is no blocking allowed on a serve.

Rule 24: First game serve will belong to the home team; in each subsequent game the serve belongs to the loser of the previous game.

Rule 25: A serve that hits the ceiling is considered out.

Rule 26: If the serving team scores 5 points in a row, service will transfer to the other team and play will continue.

ROTATION
Rule 28: Teams shall rotate in a clockwise manner each time they win the serve.

Rule 29: There shall be a minimum of 4 players and a maximum of 6 players on each side.

Rule 30: Player rotations consist of entering a player of the same gender as the player exiting or a female, this maintains the limits of three male players on the court at a time. Players will rotate off the court from the front right corner of the court (position 6) and rotate into the server’s position (position 1).
