Key Terms:

Team – 2 to 4 players, who throw (underhand only) in same order throughout each game

Pallina – small white ball that is the target (being closer than opponents scores points)

Scoring – only one team scores per Frame (all 8 balls have been thrown at pallina), each ball closer than your opponent’s nearest ball earns 1 point. In case of ties, no points are awarded. A ball touching (“kissing”) the pallina at the end of the frame earns 2 points.

Game – is played to 9 pts. The frame must be completed.

Match – is 3 games. All 3 must be played (not best of 3) – standings will be kept

Foul Line – a player’s feet may not touch or cross the foul line on any throw. The foul line is 8’ from the back wall (on our court it is the end of the highest side 4x4)

Boundaries – The only time a ball is considered “out of bounds” is when it strikes the back wall prior to hitting any other ball or the pallina. It must be removed from the court prior to next throw

Getting Started:

Generally, there is a coin toss. Winner chooses either to throw the pallina first or the color balls they want.

The pallina throw must pass the center line and not strike the back wall. If either happen, the pallina throw goes to the opposing team. The player who put the pallina into play throws the first ball.

Thereafter, the opponent players throw until they are closer “in” to the pallina (following their rotation order). The team that is “out” (further away) rolls until closer or have rolled all balls.

Only one team scores per frame. Once the score is determined, play resumes going toward the opposite end of the court. The team that scored last throws the next pallina.

The game winner (first to 9 points) starts the next game with the first pallina throw.

Other:

It’s okay to bounce balls off the side walls. It’s okay to deliberately hit an opponent’s ball or pallina hard in order to move it.

It’s a competitive game, yet more importantly intended to promote fun and friendship.

Playing bocce with a drink in hand is a time-honored tradition; we encourage everyone to have fun and enjoy in the spirit of good sportsmanship and keeping it fun for all.
