Description:
The Art Masterclass is designed for kids who love art and would benefit from more studio time! Art teaches children to observe and interpret the world around them, to express their feelings and build self-confidence, to develop fine motor skills, as well as boosting self-esteem. Creating artwork brings a sense of accomplishment and possibility, helping to motivate long-term learning!

In this Masterclass, students will engage in developing fine art skills through elements of the core curriculum of art, as well as cultural enrichment lessons for inspiration. A variety of hands-on, mixed media projects using materials such as pencil, charcoal, acrylic paint, tempera paint, oil pastels, clay, cut paper, fabric, printmaking, recycled materials and collage will be used to encourage and embrace the process of creating. Projects will draw concepts from traditional art, contemporary art, crafts and the “maker” movement, and reference well-known artists and artistic styles with a focus on self-expression. Students will also learn how to view a great work of art from an artist’s perspective, how art communicates a message through a visual medium, and how to talk about their own art the way an artist would.

As the class will include a range of ages, lessons will be offered at different skill levels, and there will be a focus on individual progression. The studio environment will be structured yet open, nurturing, positive and fostering independence with guidance. Classes will include demonstrations, video presentations, discussion, individual instruction and group class critiques. Each class will begin with a creative exercise to engage and awaken this part of our brain before we begin demonstration and discussion of the creative project. Students may take breaks as needed, and parents or older siblings are welcome to volunteer to assist younger students (5-6 year olds). All materials are included in the course fee, and our young artists are also welcome to bring their own journals or sketchbooks to continue capturing the inspiration at home. Aprons, a large T-shirt or an art smock is required to be worn in each class to protect children’s clothes.
